About Fontbonne University

Fontbonne University is a co-ed liberal arts Catholic institution in St. Louis, which is the 2nd largest city in the US state of Missouri, housing over 356 000 people, within its limits. St. Louis is also the principal municipality of Greater St. Louis, with a population of 2,892,874, which makes it the the largest urban area in the state and the 15th largest in the US.

Fontbonne was established in 1923 and gets its name from Mother St. John Fontbonne, who, in 1808 after the French Revolution, refounded the Congregation of the Sisters of St. Joseph (CSJ). It offers its students both undergraduate and master's degree programs, and it is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission.

Athletics

Fontbonne's athletic teams are known as the Griffins and they compete at the NCAA Division III level, in the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SLIAC) and the Midwest Lacrosse Conference (MLC), for a total of 10 men's and 11 women's sports. Their distinctive colors are purple, gold and white, and their mascot is, obviously, the Griffin.
